Saqib Saleem Discusses SSP Samardeep in ‘Kaptaan’: A Character Beyond Heroism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 8 (NationPress) Bollywood star Saqib Saleem recently shared his insights on portraying SSP Samardeep in the series 'Kaptaan', highlighting that his character intentionally avoids the typical hero archetype.
Discussing his attraction to this role, Saqib remarked, “What truly captured my attention was that Samardeep doesn't seek to be a hero. He doesn’t yearn for validation. When he enters a space, the atmosphere instantly transforms.”
“Such a commanding presence is seldom found in scripts. Additionally, his minimal dialogue aligns perfectly with my style. In real life, I prefer to express attitude over verbosity.”
He elaborated: “On a deeper note, what resonated with me is that every action he takes stems from a profound personal struggle. He isn’t mending the system out of altruism; it’s driven by his own inner turmoil.”
Saqib mentioned that this emotional depth made the character immensely intriguing for him as an actor.
Starring alongside Saqib and Siddharth Nigam, Kaptaan also includes talents such as Anjumm Shharma, Kavita Kaushik, Poojaa Gor, and Anushka Kaushik.
Directed by Jatin Wagle, Kaptaan explores the complexities of justice, existing in a grey area rather than a clear-cut moral landscape. It follows SSP Samardeep, an instinct-driven encounter specialist who operates on his own terms, influenced equally by his past and the bureaucratic system he engages with.
On his dynamic with Poojaa Gor, Saqib stated: “Poojaa is an exceptionally grounded actor and individual, which can sometimes be a bit vexing for me as I’m quite the opposite. However, she brings a soothing energy to both the set and our performances.”
“Our characters have a richly layered and intricate relationship, and we spent a lot of time off-screen discussing the nuances, underlying themes, and backstories. Those discussions greatly enhanced our performances.”
He added that Poojaa possesses a fantastic sense of humour.
“So, between intense scenes, we often found ourselves joking and teasing each other. This keeps the atmosphere light; otherwise, a show like this might become overwhelmingly serious during filming.”
Kaptaan is currently available for streaming on Amazon MX Player.
