Mumbai, April 7 (NationPress) Writer and director Seema Kapoor has candidly shared the emotional challenges she faced during her marriage to the late actor Om Puri, especially when his affair with Nandita Puri was publicly exposed.
In her newly released autobiography, 'Yun Guzri Hai Ab Talak', Seema, who is the sister of veteran actor Annu Kapoor, expressed her heartfelt struggles. Reflecting on this challenging chapter of her life, she described the intense emotional turmoil that compelled her to make the painful choice to end her marriage. Seema disclosed to IANS, 'Divorce is never easy, particularly when it comes as a surprise. I never wanted the divorce. We shared a profound bond—eleven years of love and friendship before tying the knot. Unfortunately, just a year and a half into our marriage, another woman came into his life.'
She further elaborated, 'I don’t believe in battling for love. When I was pregnant, the emotional weight at home became unbearable. The presence of Nandita, the woman involved with him, added to my distress. I understood that I needed to make a tough decision for my mental well-being—I chose to leave.'
Seema married Om Puri in 1991, but their union ended in divorce after a year and a half, following her discovery of his infidelity. Two years later, the actor married Nandita.
When discussing what personal revelations she has shared in her book and what prompted her to open up, Seema remarked that she has recounted the experiences that have defined her identity today.
'Life is inherently mysterious, filled with secrets. The narratives we live, the emotions we conceal, the struggles we encounter—these form our personal stories. In my book, I’ve included experiences that have influenced my journey. For instance, the challenges faced by women in society, particularly after a divorce, are often unseen yet deeply experienced. In my era, divorce was stigmatized. My mother had to obscure the truth of my situation, making excuses for why I was back home. It was exhausting to continuously evade questions and societal judgment.'
She continued, 'Moreover, the male-dominated culture frequently exploits women, particularly those who are single. However, what women truly need during such periods is not sympathy or objectification—they require respect, understanding, and authentic support.'
Last month, Seema Kapoor unveiled her autobiography, 'Yun Guzri Hai Ab Talak', at a glamorous event attended by numerous celebrities including Boney Kapoor, Annu Kapoor, Anupam Kher, Paresh Rawal, Raghuvir Yadav, Divya Dutta, Bharti Lavekar, and Jaspinder Narula, among others.
