Somy Ali Remembers Om Puri's Compassion During 'Chupp' Filming
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
On February 27, in a heartfelt social media post, actress Somy Ali reminisced about her experiences with the late actor Om Puri during the filming of the emotionally charged scenes in the 1997 film Chupp. Puri's remarkable sensitivity was particularly crucial given her challenging past.
Somy pointed out that Chupp not only presented a gripping murder mystery but also delved into the serious issue of domestic violence, requiring a depth of emotion from her as an actress.
"Despite the film's serious themes, Om ji was incredibly considerate, especially regarding my background, and took great care of me during the intense scenes," she shared.
She continued, "His way of easing the tension was to make me laugh with his fantastic jokes right after we called 'cut.' I feel privileged to have worked alongside such talented co-stars."
Reflecting on her career, Somy expressed her gratitude for having collaborated with legends of Hindi cinema like Amitabh Bachchan, Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, and Om Puri. She fondly recalled her childhood aspiration to marry Rajesh Khanna, declaring her admiration boldly during a family vacation.
In her post, she shared a clip from Chupp and explained, "It's pointless to share a throwback without context: before departing from India, I had goals to fulfill, like working with my mother’s favorites, Amit ji and Jeetu ji. As a child, I even boldly expressed my desire to marry Kaka ji in his lap at the age of 7. No disrespect intended, Amit ji, as you truly mean a lot to not just India, but to the universe as a whole."
She added, "I was fortunate to have Om Puri ji as my lead in my penultimate film, Chupp, with Jeetu ji as my mentor and Avi as an incredibly natural actor who played my boyfriend. I was thrilled! My ex even taught me to drive a stick shift just hours before we started shooting at Joggers Park (not sure if it’s still there). The white car featured in the movie was my personal vehicle."
Somy went on to say, "During breaks, Jeetu ji, the kindest and most talented actor I've ever collaborated with, shared invaluable life lessons that I still carry with me. Then there was Om ji, who had a passion for cooking and was quite adept at it. I would jot down numerous recipes in Roman English (since I can't read or write Hindi) and take them home from the set of Chupp every day."
She concluded by saying, "Thank you, Om ji. To this day, I can prepare the best dal, biryani, and my rotis are quite commendable thanks to you. They were all wonderful human beings, just like Om ji, and I miss them dearly. I owe each of them a great deal for my successes today. #chupp #ompuriji #jeetuji #avinashwadhawan #somyali
