Shaan reveals he almost chose advertising over singing, calls himself family's weakest music link
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Playback singer Shaan has revealed that he once seriously considered careers in advertising and journalism before music claimed him — and that growing up in one of India's most musical families actually made him feel like the odd one out. The candid admission came during his appearance on film trade expert Komal Nahta's podcast 'Game Changers: The Music Series'.
A Musical Family, an Unlikely Outsider
'I was the weakest link to music in my family,' Shaan said on the podcast. His father was a composer and accomplished singer; his grandfather, mother, and sister were all noted singers in their own right. Far from being inspired, Shaan says the legacy made him feel he could not measure up.
'My father was a composer and a very good singer. My grandfather, mother and sister were also good singers, so I honestly felt I was the weakest link when it came to music in my family,' he elaborated.
The Rebel Who Almost Chose a Different Path
Rather than embrace the family vocation, Shaan says he actively resisted it in his formative years. 'Growing up, I had the rebel in me. I wanted to do journalism and advertising, so my mind was diverted towards those interests,' he said. He also noted that singing came to him without formal training — something he attributes less to genetics and more to environment. 'People feel it's genetic, but I feel it's conditioning,' he added.
Despite living in Mumbai with singer-parents and having early access to the industry, Shaan turned down multiple playback opportunities before eventually relenting. 'I used to get opportunities, living in Mumbai and having singer-parents, but I rejected them. Then, I finally gave in,' he said.
Jingles to Stardom: How It Began
His entry into music came through advertising after all — just not as a copywriter or journalist. His mother worked as a chorus singer and his father had extensive industry connections. 'They got to know that we could sing, and that's how we got the opportunity to sing in jingles at a very young age,' Shaan recalled. Those early jingle sessions became the unlikely launchpad for one of Bollywood's most recognisable voices.
A Career That Defied Self-Doubt
Today, Shaan is celebrated for his soulful voice, remarkable versatility, and a catalogue of timeless hits that defined a generation of Indian film music. The irony is not lost — a singer who considered himself his family's weakest link went on to become one of the industry's most enduring playback voices. His story offers a rare behind-the-scenes look at how self-doubt and circumstance can shape even the most gifted careers.
