Mumbai, Jan 17 (NationPress) Renowned author and columnist Shobhaa De has expressed her strong disapproval of music legend A.R. Rahman’s recent assertion hinting at a possible “communal” angle contributing to his reduced work in Bollywood, labeling such remarks as “very dangerous.”
In her response, De voiced her astonishment at Rahman’s statement, questioning the rationale behind intertwining religion with discussions surrounding employment opportunities.
“This is a very dangerous comment. I can't comprehend why he has said it; you ought to ask him,” she stated.
Reflecting on her extensive experience in the Hindi film industry, De emphasized that Bollywood has predominantly maintained a lack of communal prejudice.
“I have observed Bollywood for 50 years. If there is any realm free from communal strife, it is Bollywood. Talent alone determines your opportunities; religion does not influence chances if one lacks talent,” she remarked.
De also noted that Rahman’s prominence and experience render his comment even more perplexing.
She concluded with, “Given his success and maturity, he should not have made such a statement. Perhaps he has his own reasons, but that’s something you will need to discuss with him.”
In a recent interview with the BBC Asian Network, the Oscar-winning composer revealed, “Individuals devoid of creativity now wield decision-making power, which may also have a communal aspect, though not overtly.”
“I learned through whispers that I was booked, but the music company proceeded to select their five composers. I thought, ‘Oh, that’s wonderful; I can relax with my family.’”
He also candidly shared that it has taken him years to feel like an “insider” within the Hindi film industry and spoke about his struggles in securing work over the past eight years.
