Mumbai, June 1 (NationPress) Acclaimed actress Sonam Khan revealed that her performance in the 1989 film “Mitti Aur Sona” was quite demanding, as she portrayed both a college student and a sex worker to demonstrate her acting skills beyond her ‘sexy’ persona.

In a recent Instagram post, the actress shared how, at the tender age of 15-16, she gained inspiration from visiting a red-light district, which helped her navigate emotionally charged scenes, including the film's intense climax.

Sonam posted several images showcasing her character from the film, directed by Shiv Kumar, featuring co-stars Chunky Pandey and Neelam.

She expressed: “Mitti Aur Sona holds a special place in my heart… I portrayed roles of both a college girl and a sex worker. It was indeed a challenge. I had to embody the nuances of a college student and a girl leading a dual life. I was eager to showcase my talent with this film, though I was uncertain how to do it.”

She continued: “I was often identified as sexy Sonam, flaunting bikinis without hesitation. This film provided me an opportunity, albeit in my brief but impactful four-year career, to prove I could act and retain my allure.”

Sonam mentioned her visit to a red-light area while clad in a burka, observing the behaviors of the young women there, which filled her with mixed feelings.

“I even had conversations with some of them. I felt overwhelming grief, fear, and a protective instinct towards those young girls,” she shared.

The filming process was equally eventful, as the actress recounted.

“I vividly remember a scene where I donned a skin-tone strapless dress that gave the illusion of nudity, as the scene required such a portrayal through the camera’s perspective. Initially, I was fine, but at one point, I broke down in tears, refusing to continue the scene… I was just 15 or 16 years old,” she recounted.

After much encouragement in her makeup room, she returned to the set and completed the scene, drawing strength from the girls she had observed in the red-light district not long before.

Regarding her “favorite song from the movie”, she stated it is “Zindagi Mein Pheli Pheli Baar”, sung by the legendary late singer #LataMangeshkar.

“The final song of Mitti Aur Sona, beautifully rendered by our iconic @AshaBhosle, was filmed with me wearing no makeup. The shooting concluded with my death scene, again without makeup, which was also the film's climax. I began to feel very emotional,” she added.

Sonam remarked, “I went home and cried a lot, as I had so many emotions to express... my mother looked on in shock, as she had never seen me in such distress. I created my look for Mitti Aur Sona myself, inspired by Madonna, both then and now. My co-actors @ChunkyPandey and #PranSaab were incredibly supportive throughout the filming.”

She concluded: “I will forever be thankful to @PahlajNihalani sir for granting me a role with depth. Sometimes, in a twist of fate, I transitioned from being a scantily clad seductress to proving that I could act as well.”
