Steven Spielberg Declares Christopher Nolan the Superior Choice for Directing Interstellar
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, April 10 (NationPress) Renowned director Steven Spielberg has discussed his previous involvement in directing the 2014 film "Interstellar" before Christopher Nolan took the reins. Spielberg has expressed that Nolan was indeed the "better" candidate for the direction of this monumental science fiction masterpiece.
The legendary filmmaker, who is gearing up for his upcoming project Disclosure Day in June, revealed that he spent a year working on the sci-fi epic before Nolan's name surfaced as a potential successor, according to femalefirst.co.uk.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Spielberg shared: “I was involved with Interstellar for a year… and I became fascinated with it. I dedicated considerable time at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, engaging with scientists and aerospace engineers.”
“I even enlisted Chris Nolan’s brother, Jonathan, to draft the first two scripts for me, but it didn’t pan out. Jonah even predicted, ‘If you choose not to proceed with this film, I can tell you who’s going to take it on.’”
Spielberg further acknowledged: “He was absolutely correct. The moment I decided to step back, Chris was quick to jump on board, probably the very next day. Interstellar became a far superior film in Chris Nolan’s hands than it would have been under my direction.”
The film is set in a bleak future where Earth endures devastating blight and famine, following a band of astronauts on their quest for a new home for humanity.
It stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine.
Recently, Nolan attended a screening of Interstellar alongside actor Timothee Chalamet, where he recounted being brought onto the project.
Nolan shared with Chalamet, “After we teamed up on the Dark Knight, my brother secured the role and began collaborating with Steven. I refer to him as Steven; for you, he’s Mr. Spielberg.”
“He dedicated many years to it. The project was filled with brilliant ideas and underwent various changes, but it never gained momentum until Steven was ready to proceed. Once he moved on to another film, it opened up.”
Nolan expressed his enthusiasm for the project and his delight in putting his unique take on it.
He stated: “I had numerous discussions with Jonathan over the years regarding his vision and ambitions. I was truly excited about it. The first act captivated me. I had been exploring a time travel concept and had some half-formed projects I hadn’t fully committed to.”
“When it became available, I approached Jonathan, asking, ‘How would you feel if I took this and blended it with some of my ideas, altering it slightly?’ He was open to it, recognizing that my intent was to capture the essence of what had initially inspired him.”
