Los Angeles, Oct 6 (NationPress) Actress Sydney Sweeney, who portrays female boxing champion Christy Martin in the forthcoming biopic titled ‘Christy’, shared insights on how she transformed her diet and workout routine for the role.
In a Q+A session at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the 28-year-old star revealed, "Every morning I would weight train for an hour, followed by three hours of boxing, and then another hour of weight training in the evening."
"I maintained this rigorous schedule daily for three months, with the guidance of a nutritionist, consuming a substantial amount of food, protein shakes, and supplements. During this period, I gained approximately 35lbs (15.88 kg)."
Sweeney expressed that Christy was "deeply involved" in the film's production and felt her presence was crucial as she aimed to authentically portray the boxer, according to reports from femalefirst.co.uk.
She noted, "She kind of became my best friend. Having her with us was an incredibly impactful experience.
"I've never had the individual I’m portraying observing me. It can be uncertain what they feel. But as time progressed, I wanted her there continuously because I could study her, listen to her, and receive her insights whenever necessary."
The actress emphasized her commitment to fully immerse herself in the role.
"I strive not to bring any of my own experiences into their life. But I genuinely learned so much from Christy that I applied to my own life."
Sweeney had previously stated her determination to perform all boxing scenes without a stunt double.
"Every single fight you witness, we are genuinely hitting each other. We are going full force. I firmly believe that it wouldn’t feel authentic if it involved a stunt double or fake hits," she remarked.
Christy Martin rose to prominence as the most recognized female boxer in the US during the 1990s and survived an attempted murder by her abusive husband, James Martin, in 2010. Sweeney expressed her surprise that Christy's story has not been shared on a more global scale.
