Los Angeles, June 10 (NationPress) Actress Sydney Sweeney has revealed the "insane" preparation that went into portraying the female boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic scheduled for release later this year.
In an interview with W Magazine, the film's director David Michod disclosed that the Emmy-nominated star of Euphoria gained more than 30 pounds (over 13 kilos) to embody the athlete who made female boxing popular in the '90s, graced the cover of Sports Illustrated, and fought on Mike Tyson's undercard.
“I loved it,” Sweeney stated regarding her extensive training, as reported by deadline.com.
“I joined the project to portray Christy and had around three and a half months of rigorous training. I began eating more. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed for about two hours around midday, and then weight-trained again at night for another hour.”
Sweeney, who also wore brown contact lenses and styled a brunette wig into a mullet for the character, noted that her physique was “entirely transformed.”
“I couldn’t fit into any of my usual clothes. Typically, I wear a size 23 in jeans, but I was in a size 27. My b*s grew larger, and my b* became enormous. It was wild! I thought, ‘Oh my god.’ But it felt incredible: I was so strong, like unbelievably strong.”
During the film's production last year, which has now concluded, Sweeney shared her first images as Martin.
She expressed on social media, “Over the last few months, I’ve been completely absorbed in training to bring to life the story of an extraordinary woman—a true champion who confronted challenges both in and out of the ring. Her journey exemplifies resilience, strength, and hope, and I’m privileged to step into her shoes to tell her powerful story. More updates are coming soon.”
The yet untitled biopic, co-written by Michod and Mirrah Foulkes, chronicles Martin's journey as the first breakout star in U.S. female boxing.
The film will highlight her ascent to fame and the abuse she endured from her then-husband, who attempted to take her life.
