Los Angeles, Feb 18 (NationPress) Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has initiated a legal confrontation with his own brother. The 72-year-old producer, currently incarcerated for sex crimes and awaiting trial on additional similar allegations, has accused Bob Weinstein and David Glasser, the chief operating officer of The Weinstein Company, of deceiving him into backing a $45 million loan.
The loan, which was intended to rescue the business in 2016, instead redirected funds from the company for their personal gain before its eventual collapse, according to reports from ‘Mirror.co.uk’.
His attorney, Imran Ansari, stated, "Harvey Weinstein was misled by those nearest to him and secured a $45 million loan under the guise of preserving The Weinstein Company. While Harvey personally guaranteed the loan, others within The Weinstein Company benefited financially and strategically undermined him, leaving him 'holding the bag' of debt while 'lining their pockets' during the company's crisis.”
According to ‘Mirror.co.uk’, the lawsuit is an attempt to shift responsibility for the company's downfall, which filed for bankruptcy amid Harvey's sexual misconduct scandal. He claims that Bob, 70, and others are accountable for a "financial betrayal" that compromised the firm and ultimately rendered it insolvent.
This action responds to a long-stalled breach of contract lawsuit from November 2017 filed by Len Blavatnik’s AI International Holdings, which accused the imprisoned mogul of failing to meet a personal guarantee to repay the loan. This case had been paused when The Weinstein Company entered bankruptcy in 2018.
In March 2023, AI International Holdings agreed to dismiss the case since Harvey's incarceration made it unlikely they would collect any judgment. However, after signing the stipulation of dismissal, the former Miramax executive's lawyers reversed course and requested to keep the case active to pursue a separate lawsuit against The Weinstein Company's executives.
