Veteran actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Hema Malini once shared the fascinating backstory of how she came to be known as 'Dream Girl' — a title that preceded her iconic 1977 film of the same name by nearly a decade. The revelation came during her appearance on the popular talk show Kapil Sharma Show, where she walked the audience through one of Hindi cinema's most enduring personal branding stories.

The Mastermind Behind the Title

According to Hema Malini, it was producer B. Ananthaswami — the man behind her debut Hindi film 'Sapno Ka Saudagar' (1968) — who conceived the now-legendary moniker. Ananthaswami launched a pre-release campaign introducing an unnamed actress to audiences simply as 'Dream Girl coming to town', deliberately withholding her identity to build intrigue.

Hema Malini recalled her initial bewilderment at the strategy. 'I was also like, the movie is close to release, and my name is nowhere to be seen. What are they doing this Dream Girl, Dream Girl. But he said, That is how your name is going to be. Later on, we will reveal who is that Dream Girl — Hema Malini,' she told host Kapil Sharma. She added: 'It was his idea which ended up becoming so popular.'

Directed by Mahesh Kaul and produced by B. Ananthaswami, 'Sapno Ka Saudagar' featured a cast that included Raj Kapoor, Hema Malini, Tanuja, and Nadira.
