Kolkata, Oct 16 (NationPress) The West Bengal Drug Control Directorate has amplified its monitoring of companies distributing cough syrups within the state. A set of directives and guidelines has been issued in this context, as stated by a senior government official on Thursday.
This decision comes in light of the ban on the cough syrup 'Coldrif' in West Bengal, which follows a similar prohibition in Madhya Pradesh after the tragic fatalities of several children.
The order from the West Bengal government is referred to as a “precautionary measure” aimed at safeguarding lives.
According to the new rules, no vendor is permitted to sell or distribute medications produced by another company under their name without a written agreement with the manufacturer, as mandated under Section 84D of the guidelines. Section 84E stipulates that the drug marketing company shares equal responsibility for product quality and all regulatory obligations with the manufacturer.
All cough syrup marketing firms operating in the state that source their products from outside West Bengal are required to submit a copy of their agreements to the state's Drug Control Directorate licensing authority within the next 15 days.
These agreements should be sent to the designated email address tellddcwb@gmail.com, where they will be evaluated by the directorate.
Furthermore, companies are urged to frequently check the 'Drug Alert' portal for updates and warnings related to the safety and quality of their products.
The official emphasized that this initiative will help curb the sale of substandard or unauthorized cough syrups in the market, thereby ensuring consumer safety. Recently, the Union Health Ministry released guidelines urging caution regarding the use of cough and cold medications, particularly for children.
Notably, following the deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, there has been an uptick in administrative surveillance and enforcement of regulations regarding cough syrups across the nation.
