Kolkata, Jan 3 (NationPress) The Health Department of West Bengal is set to hold a significant meeting on January 9 to finalize the draft of the State Antibiotic Action Plan. This initiative aims to combat the excessive use of antibiotics and address antimicrobial resistance throughout the region.
An official from the state secretariat disclosed on Saturday that representatives from various related departments will participate in the meeting. In addition to health officials, members from the animal husbandry, fisheries, and environment sectors will engage in discussions to ensure a holistic approach. The meeting aims to identify areas with substantial mosquito breeding and plans to introduce guppy fish breeding in these locations.
Additionally, departments such as Forest and Animal Husbandry may play a role in executing targeted measures.
Importantly, the state has been making proactive efforts to manage antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance over the past year. Specific antibiotics that pose a risk to human health due to their indiscriminate use have been highlighted. The forthcoming policy will outline explicit guidelines for regulating antibiotic use in hospitals and Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
This initiative follows last year's ban by the Central Government on 156 fixed-dose combination (FDC) drugs, often referred to as “cocktail medicines”, which did not meet quality standards. Typically, a cocktail drug consists of multiple medications combined into a single formulation.
An expert committee evaluated these drugs and concluded that they could be harmful to patients. Following this assessment, the Centre moved to prohibit these medications. Allegations have surfaced that numerous pharmaceutical companies continue to manufacture them without sufficient scientific backing.
An official mentioned that the upcoming meeting is pivotal as it will gather input from various departments to shape the antibiotic action plan.
A senior government official indicated that the plan will be discussed with relevant departments to enhance coordination and facilitate effective implementation.
