Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday, 11 May 2025, distributed 'Maternal Nutrition Kits' at an event in north Mumbai on the occasion of Mother's Day, underlining the government's focus on the health and well-being of expectant mothers and newborn children. The initiative targets women from economically weaker and lower-middle-income households.

What the Kits Contain

According to Goyal, the specially designed kits have been curated to address nutritional and essential needs of women during the final stages of pregnancy, as well as the immediate requirements of newborns in their initial days. "These kits have been thoughtfully curated to address every essential requirement for mothers and sisters during the final stages of pregnancy. It also takes into account the necessities for the newborn during their initial days, thereby ensuring the good health of both the mother and the child," he said.

Expansion Across North Mumbai

The minister announced that the initiative would be expanded across different localities in north Mumbai on a monthly basis to ensure continued well-being of both mother and child. "This initiative is currently being implemented across the entire North Mumbai region," Goyal said, adding that the focus was on ensuring that women from lower-middle-income families do not face hardship during pregnancy and childbirth.

Women's Role in Viksit Bharat

Addressing the gathering, Goyal stressed that the health of mothers and children was directly linked to the nation's future. "A healthy child born to a healthy mother will be the next generation. This is the future of India, and India's future is going to be the future of the world," he said. He further noted that women's contribution was central to India's journey toward becoming a developed nation — Viksit Bharat. "Generation after generation, they have contributed to preserving India's heritage and cultural legacy," he added.

Government Initiatives for Women's Empowerment

Goyal highlighted several welfare measures undertaken by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, including the provision of tap water to every household, scholarships for girls' education, construction of toilets in schools and colleges, and distribution of sanitary pads. He said these initiatives were helping women become 'Atmanirbhar' — self-reliant — and enabling them to participate more actively in the country's development. He also praised women's growing participation across sectors, saying they were "emerging as strong contributors to national development."

Broader Significance

The event comes amid a broader push by the Centre to improve maternal and child health outcomes, particularly among economically vulnerable populations. Maternal nutrition remains a key public health concern in India, with anaemia and undernutrition among pregnant women continuing to affect neonatal health indicators. The monthly distribution model, if sustained, could provide a structured support mechanism for at-risk households in the region. All eyes will now be on how quickly the programme scales beyond north Mumbai.
