Gujarat's Niradhar Vridhha Pension Yojana — the state's destitute elderly pension scheme — is providing monthly financial assistance to thousands of senior citizens across the state, helping them live with dignity and financial independence. Administered by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, the scheme delivers direct cash transfers to eligible residents aged 60 and above.

How the Scheme Works

Under the programme, elderly individuals aged 60–79 receive a monthly pension of ₹1,000, while those aged 80 and above are entitled to ₹1,250 per month. Funds are credited directly to beneficiaries' bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, eliminating intermediaries and ensuring timely disbursal.

Hajarimal Joshi, an elderly resident of Palanpur Taluka in Banaskantha district, has been receiving the monthly pension for the past ten years. He said the assistance has made him self-reliant, covering daily necessities, travel, medicines, and medical treatment without depending on his children. 'Whether it is for food and daily necessities or for traveling, I can spend freely and happily. At this stage of life, this assistance from the government has become a pillar of support, enabling me to live with self-respect,' Joshi said.

He added: 'We have been receiving a monthly pension of ₹1,000 for the last ten years. This provides significant assistance and helps me make ends meet. Whether I need to travel somewhere or purchase supplies, this money comes in handy.'

Scale of Implementation in Palanpur

S.B. Prajapati, the Mamlatdar (Revenue Officer) of Palanpur, confirmed that 3,988 beneficiaries in the region are currently enrolled under the scheme. He noted that the primary objective is to make the elderly self-reliant, and that implementation in Palanpur Taluka has been proceeding effectively.

Simplified Application Process

The state administration has streamlined enrolment to improve accessibility. Application forms are available free of cost at District Collector and Mamlatdar offices. Alternatively, senior citizens can apply online through their respective Gram Panchayat offices, reducing the need for travel to urban administrative centres.

Broader Significance

This comes amid a wider national focus on social security for India's ageing population, with state-level pension schemes playing a critical last-mile role where formal retirement benefits do not reach. The DBT-linked delivery model also reduces leakage, a persistent challenge in welfare administration.
