Agartala, March 31 (NationPress) - In a remarkable development for the healthcare landscape of Tripura, the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully executing two kidney transplants on consecutive days, marking a historic first for the region, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

According to Hospital Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami, this significant accomplishment was made feasible through the unwavering dedication of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is also a dental surgeon overseeing the health sector.

With the recent completion of the sixth and seventh kidney transplants on March 30 and 31, the medical institution has now recorded a total of seven successful procedures.

In all instances, both the organ donors and the recipients are reported to be in stable health.

The two latest transplant surgeries were carried out under the meticulous supervision of specialist physicians from Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, in partnership with experts from a private medical facility and research center in Imphal, Manipur.

“While previous transplants were performed one at a time, this event signifies the first occurrence of two successful surgeries on consecutive days within the state, thereby establishing a new precedent,” stated Dr. Goswami.

On March 30, a 36-year-old male from Baikhora in South Tripura received a kidney transplant from his 33-year-old childhood friend.

The following day, a transplant was conducted on a 33-year-old resident of Champaknagar in West Tripura, who was the recipient of a kidney donated by his 59-year-old father.

As per the latest reports, both donors and recipients are under close medical supervision and are reported to be stable.

The procedures were executed by a multidisciplinary team from the Departments of Nephrology, Urology, and Anaesthesiology, with assistance from specialists at Manipur Hospital.

Dr. Goswami emphasized the vital role played by nursing staff and operating theatre technicians, with overall oversight from senior nursing officials.

The sixth transplant operation commenced on Monday morning and was completed by the afternoon, lasting approximately six hours, while the seventh operation began on Tuesday morning and concluded in the afternoon, taking around five hours.

The official remarked that this notable achievement underscores the commitment of the state government towards enhancing healthcare infrastructure.

It is worth mentioning that the inaugural kidney transplant in Tripura took place on July 8, 2024, and the fifth was successfully performed on November 4, 2025.

Additionally, the Tripura government has sought guidance and support from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to broaden access to advanced healthcare services within the state.

A four-member team from AIIMS, led by Director M. Srinivas, visited Agartala Government Medical College, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, and other state-run healthcare facilities in June to evaluate the medical infrastructure and services, at the request of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
