Bengaluru, Feb 25 (NationPress) The Karnataka government has unveiled the 'Kusuma Sanjeevini' initiative, which offers free treatment for individuals diagnosed with haemophilia.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao expressed his profound satisfaction with the initiative aimed at supporting haemophilia patients.

During the launch event at the U.R. Rao Auditorium in Bengaluru, officiated by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Rao highlighted that haemophilia, a rare disorder affecting blood clotting, predominantly impacts males. Although females are less frequently affected, they can be carriers of the condition.

Rao mentioned that there are approximately 2,600 haemophilia patients in Karnataka, many of whom struggle with accessing timely medical care. Children suffering from this disorder often find it difficult to engage in learning or play, which affects their integration into society.

He noted that currently, there is no permanent cure for haemophilia. Patients traditionally required intravenous injections two to three times a week for life, which poses significant challenges, especially for younger patients.

However, advances in medical science have introduced a new Monoclonal Antibody treatment. This under-the-skin injection prevents physical disabilities and deformities associated with the condition.

Rao referred to this treatment as a miracle of modern science. It is administered once a month, allowing patients to lead lives similar to others. The treatment has already been successfully tested on 200 patients, with the state government allocating Rs 45.55 crore for the initiative, including Rs 17 crore specifically for the new medication. The annual treatment cost per patient is about Rs 5 lakh.

Additionally, the government will provide free 108 ambulance services for haemophilia patients. With the introduction of the new medication, Emicizumab, supplied by Roche Pharma India, along with ambulance services, patients will experience a better quality of life and increased social engagement.

Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized the seriousness of haemophilia, highlighting the gathering of patients, researchers, and medical professionals at the event.

“Today is a significant occasion. Our commitment is to enhance your lives. No individual wishes to suffer from such illnesses; it is a natural occurrence. The burden is not the fault of the children or their families,” he remarked.

Rao also indicated that each monthly injection costs around Rs 50,000, leading to an annual expenditure of Rs 5 lakh per patient. The government aims to alleviate the financial burden on families affected by this condition.

“Health is synonymous with prosperity. Your government is with you. Never lose hope. This Congress government will support you at every stage,” Shivakumar assured.
