Mysuru (Karnataka), Dec 1 (NationPress) The Karnataka government is committed to achieving zero AIDS transmission in the state by the year 2030.
During the 'World AIDS Day' event at the J.K. Auditorium in Mysuru, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao made the announcement.
“Since 2004, over 100,000 individuals have succumbed to AIDS in Karnataka. In the past, societal ignorance regarding AIDS led to numerous challenges. The Health Department has made strides to promote understanding and confidence in the HIV-positive community,” Minister Rao elaborated.
“With adequate treatment, people living with AIDS can lead normal lives. The government offers free psychological support, treatment, and essential medications,” he added.
He expressed concern over the recent increase in cases among men who have sex with men, stating, “These individuals often connect through various apps and social circles. It is crucial to enhance preventive measures. Since these interactions are not illegal, the focus must be on raising awareness. Collaboration among the government, parents, educators, society, and media is vital for this cause,” Minister Rao stated.
“Karnataka has a significant number of HIV-positive individuals. However, thanks to our robust healthcare system, the situation remains manageable,” he emphasized.
In collaboration with NGOs, officials have rolled out various initiatives aimed at increasing public awareness, reducing stigma, and ensuring affected individuals receive the necessary care,” he noted.
The Health Department organizes annual observances in different districts to raise public awareness about AIDS, support those affected, and honor those who have lost their lives to this illness.
Minister Rao also provided encouragement to a young woman from Tumakuru living with HIV.
