Critical Condition of Woman After Alleged Illegal Kidney Transplant in Kanpur
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kanpur, April 1 (NationPress) The health of a woman involved in an alleged illicit kidney transplant in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has significantly worsened. Medical professionals have recommended her urgent transfer to a certified transplant center that specializes in comprehensive care and monitoring.
Chief Medical Superintendent (CMS) Saurabh Agrawal informed IANS that a team of nephrologists and urologists examined the patient and raised several concerning health markers. "Her blood pressure is elevated, urine output is below expected levels, and creatinine levels have increased. Haemoglobin has alarmingly dropped to approximately 5.5–6, and total white blood cell counts have risen, with over 90 percent polymorphs, indicating a probable infection," he explained.
He also highlighted signs of potential graft rejection, a severe complication that can follow a kidney transplant. "To safeguard both the patient and the transplanted organ, it is imperative to transfer her to a well-equipped hospital that is officially sanctioned for kidney transplants and can offer the necessary monitoring and treatment," Agrawal stated.
Stressing the urgency of the situation, he added: "It is crucial to ensure the patient’s survival while also preserving the transplanted kidney."
Agrawal underscored the strict regulations surrounding organ transplantation, emphasizing that kidney transplants must not be performed without appropriate authorization and facilities. "A complete government authorization procedure is in place for kidney transplants. Such centers must adhere to specific standards, including the availability of a surgical team led by urologists, nephrologists, specialized nursing personnel, and isolation facilities," he remarked.
"All these criteria must be fulfilled for the procedure to take place, as complications can arise at any point during the transplant," he added.
Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have ramped up their investigation into the illegal transplant operation.
DCP S.M. Qasim Abdi informed IANS: "Several suspects were apprehended on Tuesday—six individuals in total. Some names have emerged, and our police are actively pursuing leads. A team assigned by the Chief Medical Officer is also conducting inquiries. We are diligently working to gather more information. Additional names have surfaced, and the investigation continues."
The alleged donor, who claimed to be a second-year MBA student, stated that he was misled into the arrangement under false pretenses. He revealed that he accepted the offer due to financial challenges, as he needed funds for his college tuition.
This shocking illegal kidney transplant operation was uncovered in the Kalyanpur region of Kanpur Nagar, drawing intense scrutiny toward the healthcare system and local authorities.
Initial investigations suggest that illicit transplant and organ trafficking activities were being conducted at Medlife Hospital in Ambedkar Puram. Police detained four to five individuals, including hospital operators, brokers, and other suspects, for interrogation following a tip-off.
