New Delhi, April 24 (NationPress) AIIMS Raipur has successfully conducted its inaugural Swap Kidney Transplant, also referred to as Kidney Paired Transplant (KPT), as announced by the Health Ministry on Thursday.
With this remarkable accomplishment, AIIMS Raipur becomes the first of the newer AIIMS institutions and the first government hospital in Chhattisgarh to undertake this intricate and life-saving procedure.
This noteworthy achievement highlights the institute’s dedication to enhancing healthcare and delivering innovative treatment options for patients afflicted with end-stage kidney disease.
It is estimated that swap kidney transplants can result in a 15 percent increase in the overall number of transplants.
Recognizing its significance, the National Organisation and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has advocated for the adoption of swap donor transplantation across all states and Union Territories, as this method could potentially boost the number of available donors. NOTTO has also initiated a ‘uniform one nation one swap transplant program’ to streamline these transplants nationwide.
In a groundbreaking case at AIIMS Raipur, two male patients suffering from end-stage renal disease (ESRD), aged 39 and 41 from Bilaspur, had been reliant on dialysis for three years.
Both individuals were recommended for kidney transplants. Their respective wives volunteered as living donors.
However, due to blood group incompatibilities – one pair having B+ and O+, and the other O+ and B+ – direct donations were not feasible.
To tackle this hurdle, the transplant team at AIIMS Raipur orchestrated a successful swap transplant.
Each donor donated her kidney to the other recipient, ensuring blood group compatibility and allowing both patients to receive life-saving organs, as confirmed by the ministry.
The surgery took place on March 15, 2025, and all four individuals – both donors and recipients – are currently recuperating well under close supervision in the Transplant ICU.
This milestone signifies AIIMS Raipur’s expanding capabilities in advanced medical care and its commitment to providing innovative solutions for patients struggling with chronic kidney disease.
AIIMS Raipur has been instrumental in the advancement of organ transplantation in Chhattisgarh. The institute has successfully established a renal transplant program, which includes both living and deceased donor transplants. Six deceased donors have contributed their organs in the past two years.
