Has AIIMS Bhopal Transformed Cardiac Surgery for a 30-Year-Old Patient?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Jan 12 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bhopal has successfully conducted a challenging cardiac surgery, granting a new lease on life to a patient facing a serious health issue.
A 30-year-old individual from Hoshangabad (now Narmadapuram district) had endured severe health challenges for the past six months, as stated by Dr. Yogesh Niwariya, Head of the CTVS Department at AIIMS Bhopal, in an interview with IANS on Monday.
Dr. Niwariya elaborated that the patient had a history of heart attack, paralysis, and kidney dysfunction. Furthermore, several large clots were identified in the left side of the heart (left ventricle), and the heart muscle exhibited weakness.
Approximately six months prior, the patient had suffered a heart attack due to the clots.
About 20 days ago, a blockage occurred in the kidney artery, leading to additional paralysis. Despite treatment from various healthcare facilities, the patient did not find relief. Due to the seriousness and complexity of the situation, he was referred to AIIMS Bhopal.
After a thorough assessment at the CTVS Department, specialists opted to proceed with surgery. Investigations indicated multiple mobile clots in the left ventricle, posing a significant risk of migrating to other organs, resulting in paralysis or even death.
A team of specialist doctors executed a complex open-heart procedure called a left ventricular thrombectomy. During this surgery, all clots in the heart were successfully extracted, significantly lowering the risk of stroke and other severe complications in the future.
“Post-surgery, the patient was monitored in the ICU, where his condition remained stable. He was subsequently moved to the ward, and he is now completely healthy,” said Dr. Niwariya, who led the surgical team.
Dr. Madhabananda Kar, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, noted that patients will no longer need to travel outside the state for treatment of such serious ailments.
“This accomplishment showcases AIIMS Bhopal’s ability to offer advanced care for critical and complex conditions. With state-of-the-art facilities and skilled doctors, effective treatment for even the most intricate diseases is now achievable,” Dr. Kar stated.
