New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has successfully conducted over 1,000 robotic surgeries within the past 13 months, as announced by the Institute on Tuesday.

Robotic surgery at the Department of Surgical Disciplines, AIIMS, commenced over a year ago to tackle complex surgical issues.

This advanced surgical robot has executed various procedures to date, including hepatobiliary surgeries such as pancreatic duodenectomy, gastrectomy, esophagectomy, colectomy, and anterior resection for gastrointestinal malignancies. It has also facilitated complex abdominal wall reconstructions for hernias, kidney transplants, and minimally invasive resections of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and pancreas for endocrine tumors, according to an official statement from AIIMS.

“This achievement represents a significant milestone, as the department becomes one of the pioneering General Surgery units in a government hospital in India to implement such advanced technology,” stated the premier healthcare Institute.

“The integration of robotic surgery signifies a vital advancement in making minimally invasive and highly precise surgeries available to a broader population, thereby setting a standard for public healthcare in India,” it added.

While private healthcare facilities in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai have adopted robotic systems in specialties like urology and gynecology over the last decade, the incorporation of such technology in government hospitals, particularly in General Surgery, has been comparatively scarce.

AIIMS is closing this gap by introducing sophisticated robotic capabilities to a public healthcare framework, ensuring that individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds can benefit from this technology.

“AIIMS is an academic institution, and currently, over a hundred surgical residents are engaged in training at the Department. The successful installation of this system will provide our resident doctors ample opportunities to learn this cutting-edge technology during their residency. This aligns our training curriculum with some of the most esteemed medical institutes worldwide,” remarked Professor Sunil Chumber, Head of the Department.

Robotic surgery presents numerous benefits, including diminished blood loss, reduced hospital stays, and expedited recovery for patients.

This technology is especially beneficial for surgeries necessitating meticulous dissection and suturing in confined anatomical spaces. For instance, complex colorectal surgeries, esophagectomies, and pancreatic procedures, which were traditionally arduous due to their invasive nature, can now be carried out with fewer complications and faster recovery times. Globally, robotic surgery has been linked with significant enhancements in surgical outcomes.

The surgical robot provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical area and offers unmatched dexterity with robotic arms, allowing surgeons to perform intricate procedures with precision.
