How Did AIIMS Raipur Achieve 100 Robotic Surgeries in Just Four Months?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raipur, Jan 12 (NationPress) AIIMS Raipur has achieved a remarkable feat by completing 100 robotic-assisted surgeries within just four months of launching its robotic surgery program, a significant milestone for cutting-edge surgical care in Central India, the institute announced on Monday.
The medical center has carried out a variety of procedures, including nephrectomy, cystectomy, hemicolectomy, prostatectomy, pyeloplasty, hernia repairs, gastrectomy, and hysterectomy, demonstrating both rapid integration and expanding clinical capabilities.
“Reaching the milestone of 100 robotic surgeries in such a short period highlights our team's dedicated approach to training and our commitment to providing consistent, high-quality care. Our goal is to ensure that patients derive significant benefits from this technology, which we are witnessing in practice: smaller incisions, reduced pain, lower blood loss, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery,” stated Dr. Ashok Jindal, Executive Director of AIIMS Raipur.
“These enhancements contribute to a smoother overall care experience for patients and reinforce the necessity of establishing a robust, well-supported ecosystem for the safe and effective implementation of this technology,” he added.
AIIMS Raipur initiated its robotic-assisted surgery program in August 2025, becoming the first government hospital in Central India to provide this advanced technology.
The program aims to enhance accessibility to minimally invasive care for patients in Chhattisgarh and surrounding states, while also establishing a structured framework for surgeon training and academic growth.
“This accomplishment signifies AIIMS Raipur's growing expertise in robotic-assisted surgery. Enhanced operational efficiency allows us to handle more cases daily, decrease patient waiting times—particularly for general surgeries—and broaden access to advanced robotic care throughout Chhattisgarh and neighboring states,” remarked Dr. Debajyoti Mohanty, Professor and Head of General Surgery at AIIMS Raipur.
This progress has enabled surgeons like Dr. Amit Sharma, Additional Professor of Urology & Renal Transplant at AIIMS Raipur, to reduce operating times for prostate surgeries to between 154 and 170 minutes, significantly below the global average of approximately 200 minutes, according to the institute.
