New Delhi, Sep 12 (NationPress) AIIMS New Delhi has successfully installed the da Vinci Surgical robot from the US-based company, Intuitive, aimed at providing surgeons and healthcare teams with essential skills and technology training in robotic-assisted surgery.
This marks the establishment of the first da Vinci RAS training facility within a government medical institution in India.
Last year, AIIMS entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Intuitive to create an innovative training center dedicated to robotic-assisted surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi.
The introduction of the da Vinci RAS at the SET facility in AIIMS Delhi will enable surgeons to acquire the necessary skills and training to execute robotic-assisted surgeries across various specialties, such as urology, gynaecology, general surgery, and others.
This collaboration is anticipated to significantly enhance the uptake of robotic-assisted surgery in India by providing high-quality training within a government medical environment.
“With this training center, AIIMS Delhi is solidifying its position as a leader in advancing surgical education and innovation. The demand for precision-driven technologies like robotic-assisted surgery is on the rise in India. By preparing surgeons to perform surgeries using advanced robotic technologies, this center aims to enhance surgical precision, shorten recovery times, and improve patient care nationwide,” stated Dr. M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS Delhi.
Access to advanced surgical training is often limited for resident surgeons compared to their experienced counterparts.
Robotic-assisted surgery, bolstered by Intuitive’s educational ecosystem, helps address this disparity by equipping academic institutions with structured training and digital platforms.
“The training facility at AIIMS Delhi signifies a major achievement in fortifying India’s surgical robotics ecosystem. By partnering with a prestigious institution like AIIMS Delhi, we are providing surgeons and residents with the opportunity to train on the da Vinci platform and ecosystem,” said Rohitt Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, Intuitive India.
The new facility is structured to offer surgeons a comprehensive learning pathway. Trainees will advance from assisting during procedures to acquiring supervised, hands-on experience in the operating room. Their education will also be supported by structured training protocols and a systematic approach developed by AIIMS, ensuring consistency, quality, and safety in skill development.
