Bengaluru, Jan 24 (NationPress) The esteemed Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology (KMIO), a leading cancer care facility in India operated by the Karnataka government, has reached a significant milestone by successfully executing 1,000 robotic surgeries.

Kidwai was among the pioneering government hospitals to embrace robotic technology and has incorporated the sophisticated Da Vinci robotic surgical system, achieving this extraordinary milestone.

Among government institutions, Kidwai distinguishes itself as one of the few providing robotic surgical options.

Sharan Prakash Patil, Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development and Livelihood, remarked on Friday that Kidwai’s feat of completing 1,000 robotic surgeries is laudable.

"The hospital delivers world-class cancer care at no expense or at affordable rates to patients. The implementation of innovative medical technologies has allowed Kidwai to provide high-quality treatment efficiently," he noted.

Over the last nine years, the application of robotic technology has enabled the completion of 1,000 surgeries, marking a remarkable achievement.

“Kidwai continues to lead in patient care, solidifying its position as a top cancer treatment center in India and worldwide. The institute's dedication and accomplishments are commendable,” Minister Patil emphasized.

Under the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Karnataka scheme, the institution has emerged as the hospital delivering the highest number of treatments.

Kidwai is also recognized as the only super-specialty hospital providing extensive inpatient services.

Additionally, it features Karnataka’s sole bone marrow transplant (BMT) unit, where both allogenic and autologous transplants have been successfully conducted.

A dedicated committee has been formed to lower treatment costs for families without BPL benefits or facing financial difficulties. Kidwai has also opted to provide cashless treatment for KSRTC employees.

Developed by the U.S.-based Institute for Surgical Research, the Da Vinci Surgical System is an advanced robotic technology and the latest version, Da Vinci Xi, has been implemented at Kidwai.

The system comprises three parts: The surgeon console, the patient cart, and the vision cart.

Using the patient cart, robotic arms are utilized to conduct surgeries with accuracy. The surgeon manages the system via the console, directing the robotic arms to make small incisions and perform detailed procedures with the aid of steel rods.

All surgical data is recorded and shown on the vision cart’s LED screen, ensuring precision and monitoring.
