India’s First Surgical Robotic System, SSI Mantra, Receives CDSCO Approval for Telesurgery and Teleproctoring

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has officially approved SSI Mantra, the inaugural surgical robotic system manufactured in India, for telesurgery and teleproctoring. This approval signifies a groundbreaking advancement in the field of surgical robotics, as stated by the company on Monday.
Created by SS Innovations, a company based in Gurugram, this revolutionary system seeks to decentralize and democratize the availability of surgical expertise. It specifically targets significant gaps in healthcare, especially in remote regions where access to specialized medical services has traditionally been difficult.
“The concepts of telesurgery and teleproctoring have been aspirations for over forty years, and today they have finally materialized. With the current technological advancements and bandwidth capabilities, we can genuinely decentralize and democratize surgical expertise, extending our reach to patients and surgeons in the most secluded areas of India and beyond,” remarked Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, the Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SS Innovations.
“This groundbreaking innovation is a transformative force, particularly for our nation, where a significant portion of the population resides in smaller towns and rural communities. By facilitating remote surgical procedures, we are redefining the landscape of healthcare,” he further commented.
Recently, SS Innovations introduced SSI Mantra 3, representing the next generation and the most sophisticated iteration of the Mantra surgical robotic system. This version has also achieved a notable milestone by conducting India’s first human trial in telesurgery.
The procedure, a robotic cholecystectomy, was performed between the World Laparoscopy Hospital and the SSI Headquarters, located just 5 km apart, utilizing Airtel's fiber optic network to ensure seamless connectivity with no noticeable delay. A cholecystectomy involves the surgical removal of the gallbladder.
SSI Mantra 3 is highly sophisticated and aims to improve surgical precision, operational efficiency, and patient outcomes by incorporating the latest innovations in robotic surgery.
In October, SS Innovations reported the successful completion of over 2,000 surgeries, including 124 cardiac procedures. The robotic system achieved a remarkable record of zero mortality and no adverse events related to the device.
The system has also been employed in 789 general surgeries, 621 urology procedures, and 269 gynecological operations, showcasing its versatility across various medical specialties.
