Key Takeaways
- Successful robotic cardiac surgery over 2,000 km.
- Performed from Gurugram on a 35-year-old patient.
- Procedure lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes.
- Closed a complex Atrial Septal Defect (ASD).
- First robotic system approved for telesurgery.
Bengaluru, March 28 (NationPress) The Indian surgical robotic system manufacturer SS Innovations announced on Friday that its SSI Mantra has successfully conducted robotic cardiac surgery using telesurgery across a distance of 2,000 kilometres.
This remarkable tele-robotic assisted intracardiac surgery was carried out from SS Innovations' headquarters in Gurugram on a 35-year-old patient at Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru.
The procedure, which lasted 2 hours and 40 minutes, involved the closure of a complex condition known as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD), characterized by a small opening between the two upper chambers of the heart.
The surgery showcased exceptional precision, achieving remarkably low latency, highlighting the accuracy and effectiveness of robotic-assisted remote surgery, as stated by SS Innovations.
Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SS Innovations, expressed, “This is a defining moment for the future of surgical care in India. With telesurgery powered by SSI Mantra -- designed for India, for the world, we are bridging healthcare gaps and ensuring world-class surgical expertise reaches even the most remote areas. By seamlessly connecting North to South India, we have demonstrated how distance is no longer a barrier to advanced medical care.”
The successful execution of this critical cardiac telesurgery marks a significant breakthrough in Indian healthcare, paving the way for a future in which advanced surgical technology plays a crucial role in enhancing healthcare accessibility and efficiency globally.
“As our inaugural foray into cardiac telesurgery, the experience was seamless, and the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System proved to be remarkably user-friendly, enabling us to perform the procedure with precision and confidence,” stated Dr. Arul Furtado, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru.
The SSI Mantra 3 Surgical Robotic System, developed by SS Innovations, is the only robotic system globally that has received regulatory approval for telesurgery and tele-proctoring.
The approval of SSI Mantra 3 by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) paves the way for remote surgeries and medical education, empowering healthcare professionals to collaborate over vast distances.
