New Delhi, Jan 23 (NationPress) The surge of innovations spearheaded by women and residents of tier-2 and tier-3 cities is reshaping India’s growth story, remarked the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, on Friday.

Speaking at the "National Skill Summit 2026", hosted by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) at PHD House in New Delhi, Singh stated that India is experiencing a remarkable democratization of opportunities. This shift is fostering an environment where today’s youth possess the freedom to explore their true potential, select their own career paths, and turn their skills into sustainable incomes.

The Minister pointed out that these changes are evident across various sectors, from civil services to burgeoning startups.

“Today’s civil service achievers are emerging from tier-2 and tier-3 cities, rural areas, and smaller towns that were previously absent from merit lists. Additionally, over 50 percent of India’s startups are now originating outside major metropolitan areas,” he stated, dispelling the notion that innovation is limited to Bengaluru, Delhi, or Hyderabad.

He further underscored the significance of women-led initiatives.

“Women are increasingly at the forefront of India’s success narratives, from startups to space explorations,” Singh highlighted, citing instances such as Chandrayaan-3 and the Aditya mission, both of which were directed by women scientists.

He noted that more than 60 percent of the beneficiaries of the Mudra scheme are women.

“Programs designed for youth are now being embraced with even greater enthusiasm by women,” he added.

The Minister observed that today’s youth in India are more aware than ever, urging the need to listen to them while emphasizing that the role of mentors and institutions must transition from delivering lengthy lectures to becoming effective listeners and facilitators.

He mentioned that for the first time, India has established a comprehensive ecosystem that empowers youth not only to dream but also to achieve those dreams.

“Young individuals today have the chance to determine their career paths, recognize their inherent strengths, and uncover their true purposes. This is where mentorship plays a crucial role—not to impose views, but to guide,” he explained.

“Previously, there was a fixation on IT alone. Today, we acknowledge that agriculture, traditional crafts, and local strengths can yield far greater impact,” he noted.

The Minister also highlighted India’s growing global reputation, noting advancements in innovation and patent rankings.

“India now ranks among the top nations for patents, with over half filed by residents who were born, educated, and trained in the country,” he stated, adding that biotechnology is set to be the next significant industrial revolution following IT.
