Both vehicles fled the area before police arrived. Shortly after, a 26-year-old man presented himself at a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds and was subsequently admitted in a critical condition. A vehicle bearing multiple bullet holes was also found at the hospital.

While attempting to speak with a 30-year-old man in the hospital's emergency department in connection with the Chester Hill shooting, police allege the man launched a physical assault on an officer. The officer sustained a laceration to the head after being repeatedly punched and required medical treatment.

The 30-year-old was subsequently arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of their duty — a serious criminal offence under New South Wales law.
