Two Sydney police officers are among four people who sustained injuries in two separate shooting incidents across western Sydney on the night of Wednesday, April 23. The back-to-back incidents unfolded within hours of each other in the suburbs of Punchbowl and Chester Hill, prompting police to establish multiple crime scenes and launch parallel investigations.

First Incident: Stolen Car Chase in Punchbowl

The first shooting occurred at approximately 8:40 p.m. local time in Punchbowl, located 16 kilometres southwest of central Sydney. Officers spotted a reported stolen vehicle and moved to intercept it when it stopped in traffic.

A 39-year-old police officer approached the car to arrest the driver, but the driver accelerated suddenly, pinning the officer between two vehicles. The officer discharged his firearm at the fleeing vehicle before it sped away from the scene.

The injured officer was transported to hospital by ambulance paramedics in a stable condition, suffering lower leg injuries. The alleged driver, a 32-year-old man, was later discovered with a gunshot wound in the yard of a nearby residence and was hospitalised under police guard, according to Xinhua news agency.

Second Incident: Drive-By Shooting in Chester Hill

Hours later, at 11:30 p.m., emergency services were deployed to Chester Hill, situated 19 kilometres west of central Sydney, following reports of shots being fired from one moving vehicle into another. Both vehicles fled the scene before police arrived.

A 26-year-old man subsequently presented himself at a nearby hospital with multiple gunshot wounds and was admitted in a critical condition. Police located a vehicle bearing multiple bullet holes at the hospital premises.

While officers attempted to speak with a 30-year-old man in the hospital's emergency department in connection with the incident, he allegedly attacked a police officer, striking him repeatedly and causing a laceration to the officer's head. The assailant was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer executing their duty.
