Key Takeaways
Washington, March 10 (NationPress) More than 40,000 American citizens have returned safely to the United States from the Middle East since late February, according to the State Department on Tuesday. This announcement comes as Washington continues its evacuation and travel assistance efforts in the region in response to the escalating conflict with Iran.
Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson highlighted that this large-scale operation has included numerous charter flights and ground transport initiatives coordinated by the US government.
“Since February 28, we have successfully facilitated the return of over 40,000 Americans from the Middle East,” Johnson stated in an official announcement.
These evacuations have been executed under the supervision of President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“Thanks to the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Rubio, the Department of State has conducted over two dozen charter flights, successfully evacuating thousands of Americans from the Middle East,” Johnson explained.
The State Department noted that commercial flight options in the region are gradually improving, which has enabled many Americans to utilize regular flights. However, U.S. charter services remain available for those in need of assistance.
“While the availability of commercial flights continues to enhance, our Department's charter flights and ground transport services remain operational,” Johnson remarked.
Despite the ongoing evacuation operations, officials have noted that the demand for government flights has been lower than anticipated.
“Currently, the number of seats available on the Department's charter flights significantly exceeds the demand from Americans in the region,” Johnson mentioned.
According to the State Department, many US citizens who sought assistance ultimately chose not to accept it.
“The majority of Americans who requested support have declined it when offered, opting instead to stay in the country or secure more convenient commercial flight options,” Johnson added.
Officials have reported that charter flights are operating at low occupancy rates.
“Even though we have made these travel assistance options available to every American who has requested help, our charter flights continue to operate at an average occupancy of less than 40%,” Johnson said.
In addition to transportation services, the department has provided guidance and logistical support to thousands of Americans throughout the region.
“Through the State Department’s 24/7 Task Force, we have directly assisted over 27,000 Americans abroad, providing security guidance and travel assistance,” Johnson affirmed.
The State Department reassured that its assistance operations will remain active as the situation and security conditions evolve.
“We will continue to provide active support to any American citizen who wishes to leave the Middle East,” Johnson concluded.
Officials have also shared contact information for Americans in need of assistance.
