U.S. Launches Charter Evacuations for Citizens in Middle East
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, March 5 (NationPress) The United States has initiated charter flights to evacuate its citizens from the Middle East, as authorities intensify their efforts to facilitate the return of thousands amidst escalating regional tensions.
A Department of State-chartered flight transporting American nationals departed the Middle East for the U.S. on Wednesday as part of this ongoing evacuation mission.
“Today, a Department of State charter flight carrying American citizens took off from the Middle East bound for the United States as part of our continuous efforts to aid Americans in returning home,” the State Department stated in a media release.
Officials indicated that further flights will be arranged as the government broadens its evacuation initiatives across various countries in the area.
“More flights will be deployed throughout the region,” the department confirmed.
The evacuation program is specifically designed to assist Americans currently in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. Citizens seeking assistance have been encouraged to register via a crisis intake system established by the department.
“The U.S. Department of State is undertaking unprecedented actions to support American citizens wishing to leave the Middle East and return to the United States,” the department added.
Americans in these countries who are interested in charter flights or other ground transportation options are urged to complete a crisis intake form or reach out to the State Department’s 24/7 emergency task force.
Since February 28, thousands of Americans have successfully returned home from the region as the evacuation efforts have intensified.
“As of February 28, over 17,500 American citizens have safely returned to the United States from the Middle East – with more than 8,500 U.S. citizens arriving back yesterday alone,” Assistant Secretary Dylan Johnson reported in a statement.
Officials noted that many more Americans have already exited the Middle East but are still traveling through other nations before reaching the United States.
“A significant number of Americans have departed the Middle East for other countries in Europe and Asia, while others have safely left the region but are currently in transit back to the United States,” Johnson said.
The State Department highlighted that its 24-hour emergency task force has been actively assisting Americans across the region by providing travel information and guidance.
“Through the State Department’s around-the-clock Task Force, we have supported nearly 6,500 Americans abroad, including offering security advice and travel assistance,” Johnson explained.
Officials further indicated that the department will maintain its support for Americans wishing to leave the region.
“The U.S. State Department will continue to actively assist any American citizen abroad who desires to depart the Middle East,” Johnson reassured.
Authorities mentioned that details regarding the evacuation operations will remain limited for security reasons.
“For operational security reasons, additional information about ongoing transportation operations will not be disclosed at this time,” the State Department noted.
A senior State Department official later stated that the government has mobilized hundreds of personnel to aid Americans in the region and coordinate departures through a combination of commercial flights, charter aircraft, and ground transport options.
“Our foremost priority is ensuring the safety of Americans by moving them from danger to safety,” the official asserted.
Large-scale evacuations from the Middle East have historically occurred during previous conflicts, including the Iraq War and the 2006 Lebanon crisis, where Washington successfully helped thousands of American citizens exit the region safely.
