Will Australia’s Parliament Introduce New Hate Speech and Gun Laws?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Canberra, Jan 12 (NationPress) Australia's Parliament is set to convene next week to implement new legislation addressing hate speech and gun control, as announced by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday.
During a press briefing, the Prime Minister confirmed that both chambers will reconvene on January 19 and 20, ahead of the previously scheduled date of February 2.
"The terrorists responsible for the Bondi Beach attack were fueled by hatred and armed with guns. This legislation will tackle both issues, and we must confront both," Albanese stated.
The Combatting Antisemitism, Hate and Extremism Bill encompasses a wide-ranging set of reforms, which includes harsher penalties for hate crimes, new severe offenses targeting hate preachers aiming to radicalize young Australians, and a bolstered prohibition on banned symbols.
If the bill is approved, it will facilitate the Minister for Home Affairs in canceling or denying visas for individuals intent on inciting hatred, as well as empower the minister to categorize certain organizations as prohibited hate groups.
Prior to the bill's debate, the government plans to present a motion of condolence in honor of the attack's victims.
Additionally, the legislation will establish a National Guns Buyback Scheme, aimed at removing firearms from the streets of Australia, according to reports from Xinhua.
"Our goal is to ensure Australia remains a society where every individual can take pride in their identity, while also making it clear that hateful, dangerous, and divisive behavior will be deemed illegal," the Prime Minister remarked.
On January 8, PM Albanese initiated a royal commission focused on antisemitism and social cohesion in Australia following the Bondi Beach terror incident.
Albanese revealed in a press conference in Canberra that his administration will establish a royal commission—the highest level of inquiry in Australia—led by former High Court justice Virginia Bell, which is expected to deliver findings by mid-December.
