Bail Hearing for ISKCON Priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh Court

Dhaka, Jan 2 (NationPress) Chinmay Krishna Das, a Hindu monk and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote, is preparing to appear in a Chittagong court on Thursday for a bail hearing related to a sedition case.
He was apprehended on November 25 at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka and has remained incarcerated amidst increasing demands for justice.
The bail petition, which is backed by 20 attorneys from both Dhaka and Chittagong, emphasizes that the case against him is based on false and fabricated allegations. The defense argues that Das, who is dealing with health issues like diabetes and respiratory problems, is being wrongfully imprisoned. His lead attorney, Ravindra Ghosh, had previously been prohibited from submitting an anticipatory bail petition.
ISKCON Kolkata has voiced optimism for a just resolution, with its representative, Radharamn Das, reaffirming their support for Chinmay Krishna Das and other religious minorities in Bangladesh. The organization has been holding prayers for their safety and justice.
On December 11, a court in Bangladesh denied Das's initial bail request, citing issues with procedural compliance. Reports suggest that the rejection was due to the lack of a valid power of attorney and appropriate legal representation.
The situation escalated when Subhashish Sharma, one of Das's lawyers, was unable to attend a hearing on December 3 due to security threats.
Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan mentioned that the absence of necessary documents and legal representation impeded earlier hearings. Meanwhile, India has urged for a fair and transparent trial, highlighting the importance of respecting the legal rights of all parties involved.
Advocates and supporters remain hopeful that the court will take into account the monk’s deteriorating health and the procedural irregularities that have characterized the case thus far.
