What Recent Enforced Disappearance of Baloch Civilian by Pakistani Forces Means?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, Jan 12 (NationPress) A new case of forcible disappearance of a Baloch civilian has been reported, allegedly perpetrated by Pakistani forces in Balochistan. This incident comes amidst a troubling increase in such cases across the region, as highlighted by a prominent human rights organization on Monday.
In a statement, Paank, the Baloch National Movement's Human Rights Department, condemned the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Arslan Shahwani, who was taken by Pakistani security forces on Saturday night from the vicinity of the airport road in the provincial capital, Quetta.
At the time of his abduction, Arslan was employed at a bakery factory in Quetta. The authorities have not recognized his detention or revealed his location, which places him in significant danger of torture and mistreatment, according to Paank.
Emphasizing that enforced disappearance is a grave breach of international human rights law, the rights organization urged Pakistani officials to promptly disclose Arslan’s location, guarantee his safety, and either release him or bring him before a court as stipulated by international legal norms.
Previously, on Sunday, Paank raised alarms regarding the alarming rise in enforced disappearances in Balochistan from January 7 to January 9, 2026, during which eleven Baloch civilians were abducted by security forces across various districts, including Kech, Hub, and Khuzdar.
The report indicates that on January 7, personnel from Pakistan’s Frontier Corps (FC) conducted raids in the Hotabad area of Kech, forcibly taking seven individuals, including students, shopkeepers, and a current employee of the Pakistani Air Force. On January 8, a 40-year-old school peon from Panjgur district, Kaleem Ulah, was abducted by the FC in Hub Chowki. Furthermore, on January 9, two individuals, Saleem Ahmed and nursing student Zubair Ahmed, were detained by Pakistani Army personnel at Naal Bazaar in Khuzdar.
Additionally, Paank noted the enforced disappearance of another six Baloch men between December 25, 2025, and January 5 from the Jiwani area of Balochistan, executed by various Pakistani security forces, including the FC, Pakistani Military Intelligence, and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
“These occurrences reveal a systematic trend of enforced disappearances and represent severe violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Enforced disappearance is an ongoing crime that places victims at high risk of torture and extrajudicial execution, while inflicting profound anguish on their families,” the organization stated.
Paank has called for an independent inquiry into the activities of the Pakistani FC and Army, along with an urgent need for international attention to the human rights crisis unfolding in Balochistan.
