Bangladesh Aims for National Elections by Late 2025 or Early 2026

Dhaka, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Chief Advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus, stated on Monday that the upcoming national elections might be conducted by the end of 2025 or in the first half of 2026.
"The election can be scheduled between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026," he remarked during a televised address to the nation at 10 am local time on Monday, coinciding with the country's Victory Day.
Yunus emphasized the necessity of completing all essential significant reforms before the elections. However, he mentioned that with political consensus, it may be feasible to conduct the elections by the end of 2025, contingent on completing minor reforms and preparing an accurate voter list.
He called upon the Election Commission, social institutions, and political parties to initiate various innovative programs to realize this objective.
Yunus proposed establishing a culture where first-time voters in all elections, including local government elections, would ensure near 100 percent turnout at all polling stations.
"If we can achieve this, no future government will have the audacity to infringe upon the voting rights of the people," added the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh.
Economist Yunus took office as the head of the interim government on August 8.
The decision to appoint Yunus was made by Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin, along with the chiefs of the three services and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Shahabuddin administered the oath to Yunus and other interim government members at the presidential palace in Dhaka, following the fall of the government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina, aged 76, began her fourth consecutive five-year term as Prime Minister in January this year after her party, the Bangladesh Awami League (AL), secured a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections.
