Dhaka, Oct 28 (NationPress) In a tragic incident in Chittagong early Tuesday, a violent clash between two factions of the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) resulted in the death of one individual and injuries to 15 others.
The victim has been identified as Md. Sajjad, a 22-year-old member of the BNP's student wing, Chhatra Dal.
According to Baklia Police Station's Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikhtiyar Uddin, the confrontation erupted early Tuesday over a dispute related to the destruction of a banner.
He confirmed the fatality and the injuries, noting that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those involved.
Sources within the party have indicated that the gunfire was exchanged between Emdadul Haque Badsha, the former organizing secretary of the now-defunct Nagar Jubo Dal committee, and supporters of former Nagar Chhatra Dal president Gazi Siraj Ullah.
The conflict reportedly originated when Siraj's allies, Borhan Uddin and Nazrul Islam Sohel, allegedly kidnapped and attacked Emdadul's supporter, Jubo Dal activist Md. Jasim.
Reports suggest that following an order from Shahadat Hossain, the Mayor of Chattogram City and former city BNP president, Jasim and others took down several banners in Bakalia and surrounding areas, including one depicting Shahadat, Siraj, and Borhan.
Emdadul explained to reporters, "Borhan had displayed banners showcasing Siraj and others. When Mayor Shahadat instructed their removal, Borhan's associates kidnapped Jasim. They opened fire when our members attempted to rescue him."
The BNP has seen a rise in violence, with factional disputes leading to numerous injuries.
Historically, Khaleda Zia's BNP collaborated with the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus to overthrow the democratically elected Awami League government.
Emerging as the largest political entity in Bangladesh following the decline of arch-rival Sheikh Hasina, the BNP has been facing increasing internal strife, resulting in violent encounters that have left several leaders dead and many injured.
