Dhaka, Jan 30 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a human rights organization dedicated to combating religious discrimination, reported that a staggering 522 incidents of communal violence transpired across Bangladesh in 2025. This figure sharply contrasts with the interim government's data, led by Muhammad Yunus, which indicated that only 71 incidents involved communal elements, as per local media sources.

During a press conference held in Dhaka on Thursday, the Acting General Secretary of the minority rights organization, Monindra Kumar Nath, presented the Council's annual assessment, mentioning that these statistics were derived from reports released by national newspapers and various media channels throughout the year 2025.

According to their findings, the 522 incidents of communal violence resulted in 66 fatalities, 28 cases of violence against women—including rape and gang rape—alongside 95 attacks on places of worship, and 102 assaults on homes and businesses. Furthermore, the report recorded 38 cases of abduction, extortion, and torture; 47 incidents of death threats and physical assaults; 36 arrests and torture under blasphemy allegations; and 66 instances of illegal occupation of land, homes, and businesses, as highlighted by the Dhaka Tribune.

As the country gears up for the elections scheduled on February 12, the Unity Council cautioned that communal violence has been ongoing during this election period, with 42 incidents recorded between January 1 and January 27, which included 11 murders, one rape, nine attacks on temples and churches, and 21 instances of looting, arson, and land grabbing.

Nath expressed deep concerns regarding the assaults on minorities, stating that while they are eager to exercise their civic rights through voting, their ongoing fears concerning life, livelihood, property, and dignity remain unaddressed.

“The responsibility for any discouragement of minority voters lies with the government, the administration, the Election Commission, and political parties,” he stated.

The Unity Council condemned a social media statement made by Yunus on January 19, which claimed that investigations identified 645 incidents involving minorities in 2025 but categorized only 71 as communal, labeling the remaining 574 as non-communal.

“The official definition of communal violence appears to exclude killings, rapes, arson attacks on homes, land grabbing, and targeted assaults unless they occur within temple premises,” Nath commented, labeling the interim government’s stance as absurd and misleading.

The organization also denounced the harassment and criminalization of minority leaders, referencing the imprisonment of prominent Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das and the initiation of several cases against senior Unity Council leaders, with some being forced into hiding.

Bangladesh has experienced a deteriorating law and order situation and escalating violence against minorities under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, stirring outrage among citizens and numerous human rights organizations worldwide.

Point of View

It is essential to approach this situation with a focus on the facts and the voices of those affected. The reported incidents of violence against minorities present a serious concern for the stability and harmony within Bangladesh. It is crucial that we call for accountability and ensure that every citizen, regardless of their background, feels safe and has the right to participate in the democratic process.
