Bridgetown, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, has urged for proactive measures against climate change during the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

In her inaugural address, Mottley emphasized that the climate crisis poses significant global threats, including food security challenges that impact not only the Caribbean but also other parts of the world. She urged Caribbean nations to adopt proactive strategies to confront the climate crisis and other urgent matters.

The 48th regular meeting of the conference commenced in Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados, on Wednesday. Mottley delivered her speech as the rotating chairperson of the conference on Thursday, according to India time.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, the outgoing chairperson, commended the conference and various international organizations for their initiatives to combat climate change and address global challenges.

Carla Barnett, the secretary-general of the conference, highlighted that, in addition to climate change, global issues such as biodiversity loss, pollution, and crime emphasize the necessity of enhancing international cooperation, multilateralism, and adherence to international law.

Special guests at the meeting included UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The agenda for the meeting encompasses food and nutrition security, climate change, and digital resilience.
