Belo Horizonte, Sep 19 (NationPress) A judge from Brazil's Supreme Federal Court has initiated an investigation into former President Jair Bolsonaro, along with his son and lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, and 22 aides, concerning allegations of graft and misappropriation of public funds during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Federal Police sought this investigation following the comprehensive report from the COVID-19 Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI).
Justice Flavio Dino stated, "The parliamentary inquiry uncovered substantial evidence pointing to crimes against public administration, specifically regarding contracts, fraudulent tenders, inflated prices, and the misappropriation of public funds. Additionally, it revealed that contracts were signed with shell companies to provide either generic or fictitious services, among other offenses detailed in the CPI report," as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
"I accept the Federal Police's request and hereby convert this petition into a police investigation, establishing an initial timeframe of 60 days for these inquiries," he continued.
The CPI report, finalized in October 2021, indicated that Bolsonaro and his aides made decisions that hindered the fight against the pandemic and recommended accountability for those involved.
On September 11, Brazil's highest court sentenced Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup.
In another update, Jair Bolsonaro has been released from the hospital after being diagnosed with skin cancer and undergoing treatment, as reported by the medical facility in the capital, Brasilia.
His condition has improved following intravenous infusion treatment; however, he requires ongoing clinical monitoring and regular evaluations, according to DF Star Hospital on Wednesday (local time).
The hospital conducted a pathological evaluation of the skin lesions that were excised from him. The medical findings indicated that two out of the eight skin lesions were identified as having “squamous cell carcinoma in situ.”
He returned home around noon and remains under house arrest.
Brazil's Supreme Federal Court sentenced the ex-president on September 11 to 27 years and three months in prison for his role in the 2022 coup attempt.
