London/Brussels, April 11 (NationPress) On Friday, Britain unveiled a substantial 450 million British pound (approximately 589 million US dollars) initiative to bolster military assistance for Ukraine, coinciding with its co-hosting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting alongside Germany in Brussels.

This comprehensive package, collaboratively financed by Britain and Norway, introduces a new "close fight" military aid segment valued at over 250 million pounds, which encompasses radar systems, anti-tank mines, and military drones.

Additionally, the support package encompasses repair and maintenance services for vehicles and battlefield equipment that Britain has previously provided to Ukraine.

British Defence Secretary John Healey emphasized that this initiative aims to "surge support to Ukraine's frontline fight" and intensify pressure on Russia.

The British Ministry of Defence indicated that the new equipment will be sourced from both British and Ukrainian suppliers, showcasing how investment in Ukraine's defense bolsters jobs and economies in both nations.

Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has also increased its support, as reported by Xinhua news agency. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas confirmed that member states have pledged over 23 billion euros (roughly 26.21 billion dollars) in military aid to Ukraine this year.

"We are certainly doing more than last year," Kallas stated, emphasizing the need for the EU to enhance its efforts.

Last month, military leaders from around 30 countries convened in Britain to deliberate on how the so-called "coalition of the willing" could effectively defend Ukraine moving forward.

At the closed-door meeting at the Northwood military base near London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer remarked, "Every party seeks a peaceful resolution, especially the Ukrainians. However, lasting peace will only be achievable with security arrangements in place to ensure any agreement is protected."

Britain has taken a pivotal role in coordinating Western support for Ukraine in partnership with France, particularly following US President Donald Trump's unexpected engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Starmer pointed out that prior meetings involving international leaders have reached a consensus on the necessity of collaboration to guarantee that any agreements made are safeguarded.

"What we are witnessing is the transformation of political intentions into actionable plans, whether concerning maritime, aerial, or ground operations," Starmer concluded.
