UK's Largest Drone Aid Package Reaches Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions with Russia
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kyiv, April 16 (NationPress) Ukraine has commenced the reception of drones from the most substantial drone package ever announced by the United Kingdom, as stated by the Ukrainian Defence Ministry. "We express our gratitude to the UK for this unprecedented delivery of drones to Ukraine... These units are already arriving and fortifying our defenses at the front lines," the ministry declared in a Telegram statement on Wednesday (local time).
This year, Ukraine anticipates receiving a total of 120,000 drones as part of this extensive package, which includes various models such as strike, reconnaissance, logistics, and maritime drones, according to the statement.
Earlier today, the UK committed to supplying at least 120,000 drones to Ukraine under this new initiative, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
This initiative is supported by a broader military assistance package from Britain totaling 3 billion pounds (approximately 4.07 billion US dollars) this year, along with the Group of Seven's Extraordinary Revenue Acceleration initiative for Ukraine.
In response, the Russian Defence Ministry has stated that the actions of European nations in hosting and expanding the production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for Ukraine are "deepening the continent's involvement in the conflict with Russia."
They argued, "Rather than enhancing the security of European nations, the steps taken by European leaders are increasingly embroiling these countries in warfare with Russia," as noted in a statement shared on their Telegram channel.
The ministry also highlighted that several European countries decided on March 26 to boost the manufacturing and supply of UAVs to Ukraine "in light of escalating losses and a critical shortage of manpower in the Ukrainian Armed Forces." This increase in production is expected to be bolstered by additional funding for Ukrainian and joint ventures producing strike drones and their components within Europe.
Furthermore, the ministry reported that branches of companies identified as Ukrainian UAV manufacturers are operational in eight European nations, with some engaged in the production of strike UAVs, including loitering munitions.
