Phnom Penh, July 10 (NationPress) Cambodia has reported approximately 7,000 cases of dengue fever in the first half of 2025, a figure that mirrors the cases recorded during the same timeframe last year, according to a health official's statement on Thursday.

However, the number of fatalities attributed to the disease has decreased to 15 in the January-June period this year, down from 23 during the same period last year, as noted by Huy Rekol, the director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control.

"All the deceased patients this year were children," he informed Xinhua news agency.

"The fatalities occurred because parents or legal guardians sought medical help for their sick children too late," he added.

He emphasized that parents or guardians should take their ill children to health facilities or hospitals within 48 hours if they suspect a dengue virus infection.

Rekol also urged households to eliminate puddles around their residences, as these are breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dengue fever is a viral illness spread through the bite of an Aedes mosquito, which is active during the day. The disease produces an acute condition with symptoms including headache, high fever reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius, fatigue, severe muscle and joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, vomiting, and rash.

In this Southeast Asian nation, the peak of the dengue epidemic generally coincides with the rainy season from May to October.

The Ministry of Health issued a reminder on Thursday for the public to be particularly cautious regarding dengue fever, as the disease has been escalating since late April and may continue to rise due to increased rainfall.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that dengue, also known as break-bone fever, is a viral infection transmitted from mosquitoes to humans, primarily found in tropical and subtropical regions.

While most individuals infected with dengue experience no symptoms, those who do typically exhibit high fever, headache, body aches, nausea, and rash. Most recover within 1-2 weeks, but some may develop severe dengue, requiring hospitalization.

In critical cases, dengue can be deadly.

Reducing the risk of dengue involves avoiding mosquito bites, particularly during the daytime.

Currently, dengue is managed with pain relief medications, as no specific treatment exists.
