Upon arrival, the German Chancellor received a warm welcome from Gujarat’s Governor, Acharya Devvrat, at Ahmedabad Airport.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared on the social media platform X, highlighting, “India and Germany are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations and 25 years of the Strategic Partnership. Chancellor Merz's visit, along with his meeting with PM Modi later today, is anticipated to further reinforce India-Germany ties.
Merz is set to engage in discussions with PM Modi in Ahmedabad, and both leaders will take part in the International Kite Festival at the Sabarmati Riverfront.
Subsequently, they will have bilateral meetings at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, as indicated by a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
The Prime Minister's Office also mentioned, “The two leaders will review advancements in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, which has recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Their talks will aim to intensify cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, technology, education, skills, and mobility, while also promoting collaboration in critical sectors like defence, security, science, innovation, research, and green development.”
Additionally, they will discuss regional and global matters, engaging with business and industry leaders from both nations.
Prior to Chancellor Merz's visit, German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, met with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh last week to discuss bilateral security and defence topics, including co-development and co-production of defence equipment.
“German Ambassador Dr. Philipp Ackermann met with Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh today, conveying new year greetings and discussing several bilateral security and defence matters, focusing on priority areas for co-production of defence equipment,” the Ministry of Defence stated on X.
In November of last year, PM Modi and German Chancellor Merz met at the G20 Summit in South Africa, where PM Modi underscored the robust and expanding relationship between India and Germany across key sectors, including trade, technology, and innovation.
