Dhaka, Dec 20 (NationPress) In the backdrop of intensifying violence in Bangladesh, a tragic incident occurred on Saturday where a child lost her life and three others suffered severe injuries when the home of a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader was allegedly locked from the outside and set ablaze in Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, according to reports from local media.
As per the police statement, the incident unfolded during the early hours of Saturday at the residence of Belal Hossain, a businessman and assistant organizing secretary of BNP in Bhabaniganj Union.
Md Wahid Parvez, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Thana, confirmed that Belal’s seven-year-old daughter, Ayesha Akter, tragically perished in the fire.
He also noted that Belal and his two other daughters, 16-year-old Salma Akter and 14-year-old Samia Akter, suffered critical burn injuries. Belal is currently receiving treatment at Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, while his daughters have been transferred to Dhaka for more advanced medical care.
Wahid was quoted by Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, The Daily Star, stating, “We are probing into the identities of those responsible for this heinous act and the motives behind it.”
In a statement to The Daily Star, Arup Pal, residential medical officer (RMO) of Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital, mentioned, “Two teenage girls and their father were brought to the emergency room with severe burns around 2:00 am. Belal Hossain has been admitted here, but the two girls were referred to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka due to the critical nature of their injuries. Around 50-60 percent of their bodies have sustained burns.”
According to Belal's mother, Hazera Begum, assailants locked both doors and ignited the house using petrol, though she was unable to identify them.
“I went to sleep after dinner. Around 1:00 am, I woke up and saw through the window that my son's tin-shed house was engulfed in flames. I ran outside screaming but found both entrances locked from the outside. I couldn't get in. Eventually, my son managed to break down the door and escape. His wife, Nazma, also got out with their four-month-old infant, Abir Hossain, and six-year-old son, Habib,” The Daily Star reported Hazera Begum as saying, recounting the horrifying ordeal.
“My granddaughters, Salma, Samia, and Ayesha, were asleep in one of the rooms. Two of them were rescued with serious burns, but the youngest girl, Ayesha, tragically died inside. Belal was also severely burned,” she added.
