Beijing, Feb 27 (NationPress) The Ministry of Commerce of China has called upon the United States to promptly retract its Section 232 investigation into copper imports, asserting that the allegations of China utilizing subsidies and excess capacity to distort competition are completely baseless.
During a press briefing, spokesperson He Yadong addressed inquiries regarding the US's decision to initiate a Section 232 probe into imported copper.
"The US inquiry is a one-sided and protectionist measure disguised as 'national security'," He stated, emphasizing that such actions will further erode the rules-based multilateral trading framework and jeopardize the stability of global production and supply networks.
An expert panel from the World Trade Organization (WTO) determined back in 2022 that the US Section 232 tariffs breach WTO regulations, according to the spokesperson.
Importantly, China is a net importer of refined copper and only exports a limited quantity of copper products, as reported by Xinhua.
If the US persists in implementing additional tariffs and restrictive measures, China will firmly take necessary actions to protect its legitimate rights and interests, the spokesperson noted.
Regarding the ongoing discussions between the trade departments of both nations, He reiterated that China strongly opposes the unilateral tariff actions of the US and is open to resolving the matter through dialogue and negotiation.
