Seoul, Aug 15 (NationPress) An associate of former first lady Kim Keon Hee attended a court session on Friday concerning his arrest linked to embezzlement charges as part of an ongoing special counsel investigation targeting the former first lady.
Kim Ye-seong, recognized as the “butler” for the former first lady's family, arrived at the Seoul Central District Court nearly two hours ahead of the 2 pm hearing, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
He faces allegations of misappropriating 3.38 billion won (approximately USD 2.43 million) from IMS Mobility, a company he co-founded, in 2023.
The court is poised to reveal its decision regarding the arrest warrant later today or early Saturday.
A special prosecution team sought the warrant on Thursday, just two days following his detention by investigators upon his return from Vietnam, as authorities suspect he attempted to evade capture after the removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, Kim Keon Hee’s husband.
Kim Ye-seong is alleged to have received 18.4 billion won in illicit investments from multiple firms, including Kakao Mobility Corp., for IMS Mobility.
Given that IMS Mobility was essentially in a state of capital distress during the time of these investments, special prosecutors suspect that the firms invested in IMS Mobility primarily due to its ties with Kim and the former first lady.
The special counsel team is also investigating whether the misappropriated funds or related profits were diverted to the former first lady's family.
Kim has rejected any claims of misconduct, labeling the special counsel's investigation a “witch hunt.”
Having been closely connected with the former first lady for over a decade, he is believed to possess substantial knowledge regarding the family’s financial affairs.
Earlier on Thursday, South Korea's imprisoned former first lady Kim Keon Hee was brought to the special counsel's office for questioning for the first time since her arrest earlier this week over corruption allegations.
Kim was transported to special counsel Min Joong-ki's office in central Seoul in a prison van after leaving Seoul Southern Detention Centre in handcuffs, as per correctional authorities.
She was shielded from public view as the van used an underground parking route.
The spouse of former President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained at the correctional center in southwestern Seoul on Wednesday after a court issued a warrant for her arrest, citing her involvement in a stock manipulation scheme, interference in candidate nominations for the 2022 parliamentary by-elections and 2024 general elections, and receiving luxurious gifts from the Unification Church through a shaman in exchange for business favors.
