Dam Collapse in Colombia Leaves 12 Injured and Numerous Children Missing

Bogota, Dec 7 (NationPress) A dam failure in the rural southwestern department of Cauca, Colombia has led to injuries for at least a dozen people and several children are reported missing, according to the Colombian Civil Defence.

Major Juan Carlos Sandoval, director of the Civil Defence in Cauca, stated, "It appears that there was a mass movement that obstructed the Aguas Claritas stream, and the ensuing water surge devastated the homes in the vicinity."

Search and rescue operations in the mountainous Micay Canyon area of El Tambo municipality have faced challenges due to landslides that have obstructed road access, Sandoval noted. Among those injured is the father of the missing children, as reported by the Xinhua news agency citing local sources.

Carlos Carrillo, the director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management, announced intentions to set up a Unified Command Post in Popayan to oversee the search for the missing individuals, prioritizing the safety of vulnerable groups, especially given the heavy rainfall affecting the region.
