New York, March 25 (NationPress) A Democrat has successfully claimed a seat from President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in a Florida state legislature by-election.

In a significant setback for the Republicans, Emily Gregory won the state House of Representatives seat in a by-election held on Tuesday, where Trump had held an 11 percent lead during the 2024 election.

Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate is situated within the district that Gregory has now won.

“Floridians are entitled to leaders who prioritize people over politics,” Gregory stated.

Despite his criticism of mail-in ballots, Trump himself cast his vote by mail in this election.

The Republican candidate, Jon Maples, had Trump’s endorsement.

The vacancy arose when Republican Mike Caruso, who had won the seat by 19 percent in 2024, resigned to take a position as the county clerk and comptroller for a local government.

In another setback, Democrats also flipped a Florida state Senate seat, with Brian Nathan winning in a by-election.

Gregory noted that voters were driven by worries over rising costs, a concern that has been intensified by the ongoing conflict in Iran, affecting gas prices and grocery bills.

Nikki Fried, chair of the state Democratic Party, remarked, “Floridians are weary of chaos, corruption, and soaring prices on essentials like groceries, fuel, and healthcare.”

This scenario poses challenges for the Republican Party as the nation approaches the midterm elections in November, which will influence Congressional control.

According to Politico, Democrats have captured 28 seats previously held by Republicans in state legislatures across the country over the past 14 months.

Additionally, U.S. lawmakers have raised alarms about increasing pressure on American weapons stockpiles and a deteriorating global nuclear situation, as a Senate hearing revealed serious concerns over the Trump administration’s military actions in Iran and the future of arms control.

During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, Ranking Member Senator Jeanne Shaheen highlighted that the rapid pace of weapon use has exposed critical gaps in U.S. planning and strategy.

“Last Thursday, nearly three weeks into the conflict with Iran, the Administration expedited over $16 billion in arms sales to the Middle East, utilizing emergency powers to bypass standard Congressional oversight,” she stated.

Shaheen characterized the situation as a “munitions and weapons” emergency, cautioning that U.S. reserves are being quickly depleted. “In certain instances, we have only about a quarter of the interceptors necessary,” she mentioned, adding that it remains “unclear what the end goals of the Iran war are.”

The strain is already impacting other conflicts. “U.S. support has become less reliable, prompting allies to increasingly purchase or fill in for American-made arms,” she noted, referencing Ukraine.

Shaheen pointed out that “over 80 percent of their strikes are now conducted by drones,” indicating a shift towards “autonomous systems and drone swarms.” However, she warned, “the support we have in the U.S. is not keeping up.”
