Egypt Stresses the Two-State Solution as the Sole Path to Mideast Peace

Cairo, Jan 9 (NationPress) Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi reiterated on Thursday the importance of executing the two-state solution as the sole path for attaining lasting peace and stability in the region.

These comments were made during a discussion with Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Parliament, in Cairo. They explored ways to enhance relations between Egypt and the European Union (EU) while addressing regional matters of shared interest, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency.

In the course of the meeting, Sisi highlighted the importance of avoiding further escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He pointed out Egypt's endeavors to establish a ceasefire in Gaza, ensure the release of hostages, and facilitate humanitarian aid access to the region.

Moreover, he expressed Egypt's commitment to the unity, security, and stability of Lebanon, Syria, Libya, Sudan, and Somalia, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Metsola, on her part, conveyed the EU's profound gratitude for Egypt's role in maintaining regional stability and security, emphasizing the EU's intention to enhance coordination and consultation with Egypt on all relevant issues, as per the Egyptian presidency.

Israel has been executing a significant offensive in Gaza as a response to an incursion by Hamas militants through the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the abduction of nearly 250 others.

Since then, Israeli actions in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of 46,006 Palestinians and injuries to 109,378 others, according to the most recent report from Gaza's health authorities released on Thursday.
